5 Must-Watch Detective Anime on AnimeDao

It is very charming to watch detective anime at Animedao. Old-school detective anime are great because they focus on solving mysteries and proving authorities wrong. Although it can be mentally exhausting to watch detective anime after another, a good mystery is well worth the time and emotion that fans put into them.

This list includes 10 detective shows that anime fans should not miss (not in any particular order). They come from different times periods (the 2000s, the '90s and 2010s) as well as different genres (horrors, supernatural, psychological and comedy). There's a show to suit everyone. The best part? All of them have aired. This means that you can watch all episodes at once.

Death Note

This masterpiece is a must-see for anime fans. While much is made of the psychological mind games in this anime, Light and his team are often overlooked for their sheer detective work. Kira may have the Death Note at his side, but detective L is reliant on his mind and the resources Japan's police force for his capture.

Detective Conan: Case Closed

Without mentioning Detective Conan, detective anime lists would be incomplete. Shinichi Kudo, a bright young man who has been affected by a mysterious poison, is now a seven-year-old boy. For fear of being murdered, he keeps his identity secret and uses his brilliant mind to solve the mysteries in his locality. Because he is a "child," the police don't pay much attention to him. He has to take on a more adult identity called Conan Edogawa (inspired Arthur Conan Doyle, Ranpo Edogawa) and thus helps all those around him.

Although the animation is old, it's still enjoyable to watch.

UN-GO

Studio BONES created this buddy detective anime. It focuses on Shinjuurou, a pessimistic and cynical detective, and Inga his quirky assistant. They live in an alternate timeline where Japan is rebuilding after the war. This unlikely pair solves crimes together.

It is a combination of supernatural and sci-fi elements. Inga is a magical being, but most of the deductions are made using futuristic technology that doesn't exist today. It raises philosophical and ethical issues about the "humanityā€¯ of highly evolved Artificial Intelligence.

Tantei Gakuen Q

Young Kyuu is a great student of reasoning and deduction. He enrolls at Dan Detective School, which is known for producing brilliant detectives. He meets and becomes friends with people of different talents. Together, they solve any mystery that comes their way.

Although the plot is mostly episodic, there are some multi-episode mysteries that can be used to help you think and deduce on the cases. It's funny, has witty dialogue, and is suitable for people who don't want to get too serious or deep.

Bungo Stray Dogs

Bungo Stray Dogs is undoubtedly one of the best-written detective anime. The anime centers around Atsushi Nakajima, the main character who discovers that he can transform into a Tiger using a "Beast Beneath the Moonlight". However, the anime also features the characters from Armed Detective Agency.

Each character has abilities and names that are based on literary figures. This feeds into the mystery and story.
